The server room has been destroyed by fire!
- Which type of servers should we buy?
- Which type of backup drive do we need to be able to read the backup tapes?
- What about emails until the new server is installed?
Are you in control of the above while having to talk to the insurance company, the fire department, the police and the employees at the same time? By the way, your telephone switch board has also been destroyed by fire!
Is it necessary? In a disaster-struck situation only few have the time to decide whether to buy a server upgrade or a just a comparable server. As investment in new equipment is needed, an upgrade might be appropriate. With a contingency plan all these questions have been answered beforehand and Centex can order goods based on a decision not made in an emergency situation. In the contingency plan it is stated how a new system should be set up and Centex accordingly has a list describing in details how to install the new system. All relevant parties are contacted immediately meaning that internet connections etc. can be reestablished as soon as possible. The contingency plan contains a physical contingency package which is kept in Centex’ server room. This package contains license keys and copies of CDs which are needed for reinstallation on new servers.
How fast can we be up and running again? All incoming emails are diverted to Centex’ servers. If Centex MailScan is utilized, an acting webmail can be set up for key users within approximately one to two hours. After approximately four hours or the time it takes to create users on Centex’ servers the company can be up and running with emails with a fair chance no emails were lost. If Centex Remote Backup is utilized, all users’ mailboxes can be recreated on Centex’ servers within approximately ten hours.
