Updated antivirus software is not enough! Data security of course comprises updated antivirus software and an efficient firewall. But there is more to it than that. A large part also lies in training employees in regard to secure handling of information as well as use of email and the internet. Often users are not aware of the potential security risk a toolbar with funny smileys in Internet Explorer or Outlook can represent. In such cases antivirus software and firewalls are as useful as life jackets placed inside a boat while you are in the water!
Basically you want to prevent confidential information from leaving your company. With a Security Check, Centex goes through your company’s data security. There are many ways of getting data and it is not necessarily difficult - often all you have to do is ask for it ... because it is human nature to be helpful.
A hypothetical example which is not unlikely A technician from the local phone company addresses the reception and says he has to change a circuit board in the telephone system in the server room because John Smith from another department, placed at another location in the company, has reported faulty telephone lines. There seem to be a lot of noise when calls are made internally. The technician assures the receptionist that her work will not be disturbed and she can continuously answer the phone. The receptionist is pleased that she will not be disturbed in her work and wants to help because that is her job, so she shows the technician where the server room is. The technician passes the reception on his way out and says that the error has been corrected. He leaves a few brochures about IP telephony and leaves. “Have a nice day – bye”.
The man who was just in the server room is not a technician from the local telephone company. He has printed the local phone company logo on his T-shirt at home and he also created a sticker for his black technician bag. The brochures he has picked up at the local phone company store. The technician has removed the company’s backup tapes from the server and they are now placed in the technician bag. The competing company for whom the technician works is now in possession of all the company data and emails.
